Engage only with an ST Accredited Electrical Contractor

Why engaging only a Suruhanjaya Tenaga–registered electrical contractor is not merely a legal obligation, but an act of responsibility.

Hire ST Accredited — Protect Your Home, Your Family, and Your Life

Every year, electrical fires and electrocution incidents claim lives and destroy property across Malaysian homes — and a significant proportion trace back to a single, avoidable decision: hiring an unregistered electrician. Under the Electricity Supply Act 1990, all electrical installation work must be carried out by a contractor holding a valid licence issued by the Energy Commission, Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST). This is not bureaucratic red tape. It is the baseline of safety.

A Suruhanjaya Tenaga-accredited contractor has passed rigorous technical examinations, demonstrated knowledge of the Malaysian Standard MS IEC 60364, and holds valid insurance. They submit work for inspection and issue a Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) — the document that legally certifies your installation is safe. Without this certificate, your home insurance policy may be void in the event of an electrical fire. Your bank may have grounds to reject claims. And you, the homeowner, may bear legal liability.

"An unlicensed electrician may save you RM200 today — and cost you your home, or worse, a life, tomorrow."

Unregistered contractors are tempting: they are cheap, available, and informal. But they operate outside any accountability framework. If their work sparks a fire, there is no recourse. No licence to revoke. No bond to claim against. No guarantee that the wiring behind your walls was done to code. Faulty earthing, undersized cables, and improper MCB ratings are invisible hazards — until they are not.

Know the law: Engaging an unlicensed electrical contractor is an offence under the Electricity Supply Act 1990. Both the contractor and the homeowner can be held liable for violations. Penalties include fines and, in cases involving injury or death, criminal prosecution.

Verifying a contractor's credentials takes under two minutes. Visit the official Suruhanjaya Tenaga portal at www.st.gov.my, navigate to the Contractor Licence Search, and enter the contractor's registration number. Any legitimate contractor will provide this number without hesitation. If they cannot, or will not — that is your answer. Always insist on a written quotation, a formal work order, and the CCC upon completion. These documents are your proof of compliance and your shield.

Your home's electrical system is not a place to cut corners. Insist on accreditation. It is the single most important decision you will make for the safety of everyone under your roof.
